Homeschool Art | Vincent Van Gogh
This Vincent Van Gogh Homeschool Lesson is meant to encourage and inspire you! If teaching Art History (or anything art-related) has ever felt a bit “extra,” indulgent, or unattainable in your homeschool day, you’ve come to the right place.
If you love art history, studying art with your kids, or are a creative yourself, I hope you find some resources here helpful, too!
Art History: A Surprise Success
If you’ve been following my blog series, “Art History: A Surprise Success” you may have seen my post about how it all started. In 2023, when we started homeschooling, teaching art or Art History was not on my radar! Then, I came across a few interesting resources, completely by accident. I was intrigued by the idea of teaching my kids about art, without paying for a museum pass or enrolling them in expensive painting classes. {I so think a museum pass would be really cool, eventually- but we aren’t quite to that point yet!}
Now, three years later, I have a simple process I use each time we study a new famous artist! I outline that process here, if you want to check it out. I hope it is helpful for you.

Our Vincent Van Gogh Homeschool Lessons
Back in 2023, one of the artists I started with was Vincent Van Gogh. I was already a bit familiar with him, after studying him in high school. I found some amazing supplemental books at our library, so we read more about his life. I also found some awesome content on YouTube (we use the free version of SafeShare, to block ads!) and we had ourselves a little set of activities!
Here is a list of my favorite resources, that we used to study Vincent Van Gogh! I hope these are helpful for you. If you need some background information on how I typically teach art history during a given week, this post outlines my process in detail.

Draw Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night
There are many other videos available on YouTube for Vincent, both biographical and to imitate his art in various mediums.
I cannot forget to mention my preschooler’s favorite book (ever since he was 2): Vincent Paints His House! A great book about patterning and colors. If you have a little one you’re including in school, this is a sweet title to grab at the library while you’re there.
I hope you have gleaned some good tips from this Homeschool Art History Series! I will continue to share each artist, as well as other reading and writing related content. If you have a question or suggestion, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
