Impromptu Artist Project: Painting Pumpkins

If you know me, you know I’m always on the lookout for an artistic project!

Even better if it can involve an artist study–especially on artists we have already learned about!

When I saw this Fall Pumpkin Artist Study project by Lindsay, of Little School of Smiths–I knew we had to try it!

Best Fall Art Projects

This project, from Little School of Smiths, was awesome. The creator is a homeschooling mom of four. I follow her on Instagram and she has some incredible project ideas!

I did this pumpkin artist project with my 3rd grader, kindergartener, and two year old. I also got a pumpkin for myself! I bought these (real!) white pumpkins at our local pumpkin patch for $2 apiece.

Next, I purchased these awesome artist brochures from Teachers Pay Teachers – these are the same ones that Lindsay recommends in her post. We have already studied seven of these artists, with the other twenty artists as potentials for the future!

We used acrylic paint, which I typically get at Hobby Lobby (we like this brand-Master’s Touch, and I just wait for it to go on sale!)

I had each kiddo choose a different artist to emulate, and here is what they chose:

My kindergartener, Beau, chose Pablo Picasso! He loves Picasso’s bright colors, strange exaggerated facial features, and general uniqueness. 🙂
My 3rd grader, Emmaline, chose a mixture of Claude Monet + Georgia O’Keefe. She started with a Monet background, and then later added on some florals like Georgia, over top.

Impromptu Projects for Homeschool Ruts

Sometimes impromptu projects like these get us out of mini-ruts! We are only about two months into the school year, but some of our subjects (like Art History) have not quite been panning out the way I had planned.

Because my kids’ needs change from year to year, I often have to pivot and make a new plan. We have not been able to dive into Art History at quite the depth as we usually do in fall, because of my youngest, this year! She adds quite a bit of spice to our homeschool day, and Art History is a subject that often gets put by the wayside.

I know many homeschool parents can attest to this. For this reason, I had a brief spurt of inspiration when I saw Little School of Smiths’ post. It was the perfect, budget-friendly project to get us excited about artists, and change things up a bit in our normal routine.

How about you – do you have any favorite fall art projects?

With love,

Cait

Hi there!

I’m Cait: an elementary-teacher-turned-homeschool-mom. A few of my favorite things are: reading memoirs, teaching writing, speaking Spanish, and making core memories with my husband and kids. I love a good teacher uniform (cardigans, flats & chunky glasses), pressed flowers, charm bracelets, & sipping coffee from my custom book mug.

I also love to create resources for homeschool parents! I have a storefront on Teachers Pay Teachers, that you can browse by clicking below:
